What
is film and cinema?
“A film is a series of photographs which are put together
in such a way that they: create an image of a world which
already exists; create a new world; tell a story; make a
formal pattern of pictures and sounds.”
“The cinema is a set of institutional practices, codes and
conventions by which films are produced, exhibited,
consumed and understood by audiences.”
Institutions are all the organisations involved in making
film and getting it to audiences. This includes film
production companies, distributors (companies which
specialise in getting films into cinemas or video shops),
and exhibitors (companies which actually show the films or
hire the videos).
